It is a good idea to make notes about the playing style of your opponents while playing poker. This will definitely increase your expected earnings. However, most beginning players do not know where or how to start. Therefore, we will give you some ideas below which will help you to make the right notes about your opponents. This is just another tool to win more in the long run!
1. With what hands does your opponent raise before the flop?
In case an opponent
raise with hands in positions which is not conform the standard tight aggressive game, you should definitely make a note of that.
For example, in case the person raises when being
UTG with

in his/her hands. In this manner you will know which players are
loose aggressive before the
flop.
2. First call and then re raise?
Some players like to
call with

or

(this is called limping) in the hope that someone else raises so that he/she can re
raise that. It is important to keep in mind which players do this. Some also do this with lesser hands than
AA or
KK.
3. With which hand does the opponent call a raise before the flop?
It is important to know with which hands an opponent calls, especially in case he/she calls with hands which are not recommended to play in normal poker theory when dealing with a normal game (hands like

or

).
4. With which hands does the opponent call a raise before the flop and makes a bet on the flop afterwards?
Try to keep track on which hands the opponent calls a
raise before the
flop in order to make a
bet on the
flop. Some players only do this with good hands (at least a two
pair or
three of a kind) whereas others also do this in order to get an idea about their position with regards to the rest. Those players will
fold when they get hit by a reraise because they do not have a good hand.
5. Which players play every hand with an Ace?
Some players play every hand with an Ace regardless of the
kicker. In most cases they also do this regardless of their position. This is fantastic to know when you have an Ace with a good
kicker.
6. Which players play every hand with suited cards?
Just like the players who play every hand with an Ace there are also those who play every hand with two cards of the same suit. Often when players make the Ace mistake they also make the
suited mistake. Players who behave like this are in general very bad players who make many mistakes.
7. Which players call every bet when they have a flush draw?
Players mentioned above often also make this mistake. In case they have a
flush draw they
call any
bet in order to make a chance on the
flush. It is important to make these players pay a lot for their gamble (in order to make them
loose money in the long run given bad pot
odds). In other words,
bet the pot on the
flop and again on the
turn and
fold when the
flush is possible!
8. How does the opponent play Ace-King?
This is often also very interesting information given that this is often a hand you have to deal with when you face a pot in which there is a
raise. Most players will make a continuation
bet regardless whether or not there appeared an additional Ace or King at the
flop. Furthermore it is interesting to know who will
fold in case you make a re
raise and who will
call in the hope to hit an Ace or King at the
turn. It is also interesting to know who makes a second continuation
bet on the
turn in case you just
call on the
flop. Most important to know is who will go
all-in or
call all-in in case there does appear an Ace or King at the
flop.
Of course there are many other things you could make notes of but these are the basics you should start with. Hopefully it will make you more profitable!
